The Cumulative Mass Profile of the Milky Way as Determined by Globular Cluster Kinematics from Gaia DR2
Gwendolyn Eadie
; Mario Jurić
Abstract
We present new mass estimates and cumulative mass profiles (CMPs) with Bayesian credible regions for the Milky Way (MW) Galaxy, given the kinematic data of globular clusters (GCs) as provided by (1) the Gaia DR2 collaboration and the HSTPROMO team, and (2) the new catalog in Vasiliev (2019). We use GCs beyond 15 kpc to estimate the CMP of the MW, assuming a total gravitational potential model <?CDATA ${\rm{\Phi }}(r)={{\rm{\Phi }}}_{\circ }{r}^{-\gamma }$?> , which approximates an NFW-type potential at large distances when γ = 0.5. We compare the resulting CMPs given data sets (1) and (2), and find the results to be nearly identical. The median estimate for the total mass is M 200 = 0.70 × 1012 M ⊙ and the 50% Bayesian credible interval is <?CDATA $(0.62,0.81)\times {10}^{12}\,{M}_{\odot }$?> . However, because the Vasiliev catalog contains more complete data at large r, the MW total mass is slightly more constrained by these data. In this work, we also supply instructions for how to create a CMP for the MW with Bayesian credible regions, given a model for M(<r) and samples drawn from a posterior distribution. With the CMP, we can report median estimates and 50% Bayesian credible regions for the MW mass within any distance (e.g., <?CDATA $M(r=25\,\mathrm{kpc})=0.26\,(0.20,0.36)\times {10}^{12}\,{M}_{\odot }$?> , <?CDATA $M(r=50\,\mathrm{kpc})\,=0.37\,(0.29,0.51)\times {10}^{12}\,{M}_{\odot }$?> , <?CDATA $M(r\,=100\,\mathrm{kpc})=0.53\,(0.41,0.74)\times {10}^{12}\,{M}_{\odot }$?> , etc.), making it easy to compare our results directly to other studies.

Abstract
Advanced LIGO’s second observing run (O2), conducted from 2016 November 30 to 2017 August 25, combined with Advanced Virgo’s first observations in 2017 August, witnessed the birth of gravitational-wave multimessenger astronomy. The first ever gravitational-wave detection from the coalescence of two neutron stars, GW170817, and its gamma-ray counterpart, GRB 170817A, led to an electromagnetic follow-up of the event at an unprecedented scale. Several teams from across the world searched for EM/neutrino counterparts to GW170817, paving the way for the discovery of optical, X-ray, and radio counterparts. In this article, we describe the online identification of gravitational-wave transients and the distribution of gravitational-wave alerts by the LIGO and Virgo collaborations during O2. We also describe the gravitational-wave observables that were sent in the alerts to enable searches for their counterparts. Finally, we give an overview of the online candidate alerts shared with observing partners during O2. Alerts were issued for 14 candidates, 6 of which have been confirmed as gravitational-wave events associated with the merger of black holes or neutron stars. Of the 14 alerts, 8 were issued less than an hour after data acquisition.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to demonstrate how the logarithmic millimeter continuum gradient observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) may be used to estimate optical thickness in the solar atmosphere. We discuss how using multiwavelength millimeter measurements can refine plasma analysis through knowledge of the absorption mechanisms. Here we use subband observations from the publicly available science verification (SV) data, while our methodology will also be applicable to regular ALMA data. The spectral resolving capacity of ALMA SV data is tested using the enhancement coincident with an X-ray bright point and from a plasmoid ejection event near active region NOAA12470 observed in Band 3 (84–116 GHz) on 2015 December 17. We compute the interferometric brightness temperature light curve for both features at each of the four constituent subbands to find the logarithmic millimeter spectrum. We compared the observed logarithmic spectral gradient with the derived relationship with optical thickness for an isothermal plasma to estimate the structures’ optical thicknesses. We conclude, within 90% confidence, that the stationary enhancement has an optical thickness between 0.02 ≤ τ ≤ 2.78, and that the moving enhancement has 0.11 ≤ τ ≤ 2.78, thus both lie near to the transition between optically thin and thick plasma at 100 GHz. From these estimates, isothermal plasmas with typical Band 3 background brightness temperatures would be expected to have electron temperatures of ∼7370–15300 K for the stationary enhancement and between ∼7440 and 9560 K for the moving enhancement, thus demonstrating the benefit of subband ALMA spectral analysis.
