Approach for a Rule Based System for Capturing and Usage of Knowledge in the Manufacturing Industry

Jivka Ovtcharova; Alexander Mahl; Robert Krikler

The support of manufacturing machines with IT solutions becomes state-of-the art in the production process. For this reason the European Chinese research project KoBaS (Knowledge Based Customized Services for Traditional Manufacturing Sectors Provided by a Network of High Tech SMEs) aims to create customized services for manufacturing machines providing a set of tools including advanced task and process planning machine configuration, maintenance, training and management support. This paper describes a software application for capturing and re-using rule based knowledge concerning manufacturing machine services listed before. The system is designed to support different kinds of manufacturing machines and manufacturing machine specific domains and furthermore to support an open and easy to implement data exchange and communication process.

Neural Network System for Knowledge Discovery in Distributed Heterogeneous Data

A. V Timofeev; P. S. Azaletskiy; P. S Myshkov; Wang Kesheng

This paper proposed a distributed KDD system allowing remote usage of expert knowledge. Its implementation on the base of polynomial neural networks is described. The system is an universal KDD tool as it can build decision-making models in any subject field. Its implementation as a webservice will allow third-party software developers to create specialized applications, which focus on neural knowledge base usage.

Assessment of Surface Roughness Model for Turning Process

Yasir Hadi; Salah Gasim Ahmed

The quality surface of an engineering component plays an important role in its performance. This research focuses on developing an empirical model for prediction of surface roughness in finish turning. The model considers the following working parameters: feed, depth of cut, and spindle speed. Nonlinear regression analysis, with logarithmic data transformation is applied in developing the empirical model. Metal cutting experiments and statistical tests demonstrate that the model developed in this research produces smaller errors and has a satisfactory result.

A Study on Product Optimization Design Based on Genetic Algorithms

Guiqin Li; Xiaojian Liu; Qinfeng Yuan; Minglun Fang

Genetic algorithms (GAs) can be viewed as random searching algorithm that based on the ideas of natural evolution. It is quite suitable for the complicated non-structural problems, for it has some properties such as self-adaptability, parallelity, evaluation-based, probability and multi-solution. Its principle is similar to human designers’ behavior, a trial-and-error process guided by the evaluation regarding the goal: product optimization schemes. The paper analyzes the comparability between product optimization design and GAs, and proposes a technical method with its algorithm structures based on GAs. The codified representation, evaluation function and optimize searching of product design was basically realized based on GAs.

Three-Dimensional Multi-Pipe Route Optimization Based on Genetic Algorithms

Huanlong Wang; Cuilian Zhao; Weichun Yan; Xiaowei Feng

To optimize the design of three-dimensional multi-pipe, multi-constraint and multi-objective path planning, an approach based on Genetic Algorithms (GA) is presented in this paper, which includes definition of genes to deal with pipe routes, definition and application of fitness functions, and definition of punishing function set by constraints. An example and good simulation results are also presented to show the validity of this approach.

Axiomatic Design Using Ontology Modeling for Interoperability in Small Agriculture Machinery Product Development

Jiandong Jiang; Fang Xu; Xinrong Zhen; Xian Zhang; Yangyu Wang; Libin Zhang

Small Agricultural machinery (SAM) is applied widely in agriculture, forestry and stockbreeding. We focus the reconfiguration and Interoperability of the complex process of SAM product development, and propose a design architecture employing axiomatic design method and ontology information representation. In the proposed design process, product function decomposing and recomposing according to independent axiom of axiomatic design, all information of all design phases is expressed in ontology information model with XML language so that can be communicated among all engineers. A case study conducted in Small Agriculture Machinery (SAM) design helps to illustrate the proposed approach, it shows the proposed methods are feasible and reliable, lays a foundation of SAM product reconfigurable design system.

Maximum Entropy Optimum Design for Product Structure

Xu Yang; Xingyuan Wang

Taking the product cost as goal function, a maximum entropy method is used to set up a mathematical model for mechanical structural optimization. By using MATLAB, the computing program is made. And then an example for a mechanical product is given out — a motorcycle frame optimum, this is an optimization with sizes, stresses and frequency constraints. Results show that the optimum plan is feasible and effective in saving cost.

A Problem-Specific Genetic Algorithm for Path Planning of Mobile Robot in Greenhouse

Xuemei Liu; Jin Yuan; Kesheng Wang

This paper proposes a novel Genetic Algorithms (GAs) approach for a near-optimal path planning of a mobile robot in a greenhouse. The chromosome encoding features in inverse proportion between research spaces of GAs and complexity of obstacles. The fitness evaluation is designed for both incomplete and complete paths to guide the evolutional direction. The crossover and mutation operators are trimmed to he path planning problem. Two operators were presented to promote the effectiveness of evolution of problem-specific GAs. The simulation results obtained is satisfactory.

Research on the Dynamics of Flexible Manipulators

Li Tu; Jinlian Deng; Huanya Cao; Pixuan Zhou

The dynamics of a Flexible Manipulator system are described by an infinite-dimensional mathematical model, since the model consists of partial differential equations. But to design a finite-dimensional controller, a finite-dimensional system model is needed. To achieve this goal, a finite dimensional approximation needs to be used to model a flexible manipulator, that is, to retain a finite number of modes, and to drop off the other, less significant modes based on the requirements of the controller. The scheme in developing a mathematical model is to use the Lagrangian method or Hamiltonian’s Principle to the total kinetic energy, total potential energy and virtual work done by the torque actuated to the joint. This method will not introduce extra errors into system and will be used to obtain the state-space model for a flexible manipulator suggested in this paper. Dynamics of flexible manipulators with shear force and rotatory inertia are derived, and state-space equations with the integration of DC motor dynamics are developed as a theoretical base for mechatronic designs.
