Around the World
In science news around the world this week, Thomas Insel discussed the aims, structure, and temporary leadership of the new National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences; a joint German-Israeli research center on archaeology and human evolution is planned; Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has vowed to more than double India's spending on R&D over the next 5 years and build two major research facilities; sea snakes could be going missing from a haven in the Pacific Ocean; a new study suggests the Canadian High Arctic is also a good spot for ground-based optical astronomy; and a report has challenged an ambitious U.S. climate research plan.

Fakebook, a Facebook look-alike, is rapidly becoming a popular teaching tool for science, history, and other school subjects, with a quarter of a million hits per week. And this week's numbers quantify the improvement in cars' average gas mileage from 1980 to 2006, the percentage of clinical trials that were still unpublished 30 months after they ended, and the increase in toxic chemicals released into the environment from 2009 to 2010.
