LIFE SCIENCE TECHNOLOGIES: Mass Spec Imaging: From Bench to Bedside
Jeffrey M. Perkel
There's a lot of high-tech equipment in today's clinical laboratory. Microscopes and histology stains are sharing bench-space with flow cytometers and microfluidic processors, DNA sequencers, and microarray readers—and mass spectrometers. Long the province of chemists and proteomicists, mass spectrometry has more recently established itself as a bona fide clinical tool. Now a new application is heading to the clinic, mass spec imaging.

The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences: Envisioning an Innovative Future
The importance of food safety and security in today's global economy cannot be ignored. China has recognized that advances in agricultural science and technology are essential in order to continue to feed its growing population.
CAAS, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, is leading the effort to keep China ahead of the curve by growing itself into a top, world-class institution that can support the future needs of a developing nation. In this booklet, we look into some of the programs and institutes that CAAS oversees to gain some insight into how the future of agriculture in China might look.

A Switch Between Topological Domains Underlies HoxD Genes Collinearity in Mouse Limbs
Guillaume Andrey; Thomas Montavon; Bénédicte Mascrez; Federico Gonzalez; Daan Noordermeer; Marion Leleu; Didier Trono; François Spitz; Denis Duboule
Collinearity Cracked in Tetrapod Limbs
During limb development, the time a nd place of Hox transcription are fixed by respective gene position within the gene cluster. Andrey et al. (p. 1234167 ; see the Perspective by Rodrigues and Tabin ) found that this enigmatic property results from the opposite and successive actions of two large regulatory landscapes located on either side of the mouse Hox locus. In the early phase, one of these topological domains regulates transcription in the proximal limb until a switch occurs toward the other topological domain, which takes over the regulation in the distally developing digits. As a side effect of this antagonistic regulatory strategy, cells in-between have lessened Hox transcription, which generates the wrist.

Imaging Morphogenesis: Technological Advances and Biological Insights
Philipp J. Keller
Morphogenesis, the development of the shape of an organism, is a dynamic process on a multitude of scales, from fast subcellular rearrangements and cell movements to slow structural changes at the whole-organism level. Live-imaging approaches based on light microscopy reveal the intricate dynamics of this process and are thus indispensable for investigating the underlying mechanisms. This Review discusses emerging imaging techniques that can record morphogenesis at temporal scales from seconds to days and at spatial scales from hundreds of nanometers to several millimeters. To unlock their full potential, these methods need to be matched with new computational approaches and physical models that help convert highly complex image data sets into biological insights.
