The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic behavior of eight genotypes of papaya under agroecological conditions of the subtropical zone of Salta and Jujuy, MR was used as a control variety. Germination and vegetative behavior, the occurrence of female sterility, carpeloidy, pentandry, abortions of fruits, in nursery and in the field were studied and correlated with environmental conditions. The yield, the external and internal quality of the fruits was determined. RI511 was the variety that presented the greatest development of the plant in the nursery and field stage. MR, SSBs and RI511, were the earliest varieties, flourishing between 64 and 75 days after transplantation. A positive relationship was found between the height at the first flower and the days at flowering and fruiting. The number of leaves was a direct indicator with the vegetative growth and yield. The first fruits were harvested 10 months after the transplant according to the variety. Temperatures higher than 35 degrees Celsius (GC), combined with low relative humidity predisposed to the appearance of sterile flowers. The carpellody and the pentandría had greater incidence when temperatures less than 15 GC were registered. The SSSy and Ek varieties presented the highest amount of carpelloid and pentand fruits, while SSSy and SSC exhibited better fruit quality (total soluble solids, color and tolerance to Asperisporium caricae (Speg.) Maubl.) The varieties with the highest fruit yield were , MR with 46 kg plant-1 and RI511 with 42 kg plant-1.
