Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) is an infectious disease caused by a lentivirus, a life-long persistent and asymptomatic infection. The virus has three principal structural proteins, gp90, gp45 and p26, capable of inducing an effector immune responses during this stage to eliminate the ancestral viral quasispecies but no epitopes T and/or B have been identified to induce it yet. Based on the above statements, in this work we analyze the antigenic and immunogenic capacity of three synthetic peptides gp90(416-444), gp45(522-546), and p26(318-346), which mimic conserved regios of the principal structural proteins of the EIA virus. Antigenicity was evaluated through ELISA and lymphoproliferation in sera and lymphocytes from persistently infected horses and immunogenicity through study the humoral and cellular immune response in BALB/c mice, inoculated with 0, 20 and 100 μg of each peptide /animal. The reactivity of equine sera and lymphocytes from infected animals showed that gp90(416-444), gp45(522-546) have been recognized more than p26(318-346). In mice inoculated it was shown, that gp90(416-444), and gp45(522-546) were capable of producing greater antibody synthesis than p26(318-346). Indeed, the evaluation of the cellular immune response showed that gp90(416-444) was capable of stimulating the production of IFNgamma, whereas gp45(522-546) and p26(318-346) stimulated proliferation of lymphocytes from animals inoculated with these peptides. Upon these results, we can concluded that the peptides gp90(416-444) and gp45(522-546), could be included in a vaccine to protect horses from EIAV.
